Kandy Joyas Zen: featured artist

Hace un tiempo descubrí una tienda que me maravilló con sus diseños coloridos, alegres, con un toque de dulzura o "cursi" como su dueña muchas veces lo describe. Estoy hablando de supercursi, una marca de una diseñadora española llamada Ylenia a la que le encanta hacer cosas hechas a mano, los mercadillos y los sandwiches de aguacate.

Some time ago I found a shop that amazed me with their colorful and cheerful designs with a touch of sweetness or "twee" as the owner often describes it. I'm talking about supercursi, a brand by a Spanish designer named Ylenia who loves to do handmade things, fleamarkets and avocado sandwiches.

"Un día, hice un gatito negro de fieltro para decorar la caja donde mi gato Misifú acostumbraba dormir cuando era tan pequeño como mi mano. Esa fue la semilla de supercursi, mi marca de accesorios hechos a mano y otras cositas; un sueño que ha ido creciendo desde entonces..."

"One fine day, I made a black felt kitty to decorate the box where my cat Misifú used to sleep when he was as little as my hand. That silly thing was the beginning of supercursi, my brand of handmade accesories and other little things; a dream that has been growing up since then..."

Kandy: ¿A qué te dedicas? ¿La fabricación de las muñecas y los accesorios hechos a mano es tu trabajo a tiempo completo o es más bien un hobby?

Kandy: Does making these dolls and handmade accesories is your full time job or is it a hobby?

Supercursi: Me licencié en Periodismo, pero hace algunos años encontré lo que de verdad me gusta hacer, que es crear cosas con las manos.

supercursi (así, en minúscula) es el que considero mi trabajo principal y al que me gustaría dedicarme por completo en un futuro no muy lejano, aunque de momento lo compagino con el trabajo de monitora de actividades con niños. Puedo decir que tengo dos trabajos muy bonitos :)

Supercursi: I studied journalism, but some years ago I discovered what I really enjoy doing, which is to create things with my hands.

supercursi (yes, in lower case) is what I consider my main job and is what I would like to do full time soon, but for now I combine it with my job of monitoring activities with children. I can say I have two very nice jobs :)

K: Cuéntame un poco sobre tu tienda, ¿En qué te inspiras para tus diseños?

K: Tell me a little about your store, how does your inspiration for your designs?

S: Estar relajada me activa la creatividad. Me gustan las cosas hechas despacio, la tranquilidad y la sensación de libertad, así que ir al campo -¡me encanta ir a observar a los pájaros!-, merendar con amigos o un viaje en autobús hacen que la libreta supercursi eche humo. El juego, la magia, la fantasía y la Naturaleza me inspiran a la hora de crear.

S: My creativity is activated when I'm relaxed.. I like to do things slowly, I like to be calm and the feeling of freedom. I like to go to the countryside - I love to watch the birds! -, picnic with friends or a bus trip makes the supercursi´s notebook be filled of new ideas. Play games, the magic and fantasy and Mother Nature inspire me to create.

K: ¿Qué consejos darías a aquellas personas que están comenzando en el mundo del craft?

K: What advice would you give to those who are starting in the world of craft and handmade?

S: Seguramente no soy la más indicada para dar consejos, pero les diría que más trabajo genera más ideas, y que no teman probar cualquier idea peregrina que se les pase por la cabeza porque puede acabar siendo la mejor, y si no siempre se habrá aprendido algo.

S: Maybe I'm not the best to give advices, but I would say that more work generates more ideas, and people should try any strange idea that they go through their head because it can end up being the best... and if that don´t happen, you always have learned something.

K: Cuéntame un poco sobre nuevos proyectos, ideas futuras en las que podremos ver a supercursi.

K: Tell me a little about new projects, future ideas where we can see supercursi.

S: ¡Me vuelvo loca de todo lo que quiero hacer! Además de seguir creando nuevos personajitos (las niñas-algo) me gustaría hacer muñecos, una línea más enfocada a los niños, ilustración y nuevos complementos que se mueren por salir de la libreta de ideas. También me gustaría reconciliarme con la máquina de coser para hacer otro tipo de piezas más grandes, y aprender a tejer para hacer bufandas larguísimas. Y seguir trabajando con la misma (¡o más!) ilusión, claro :)

S: I go crazy about all things I want to do! In addition to creating new little handmade dolls (somenthing-girls) I would like to make other kind of dolls: a line more focused on children, illustration and new accessories that are trying to get out of my notebook! I would also like to reconcile with the sewing machine to make other larger pieces, and learn to knit very long scarves. And keep working with the same (or more) illusion, of course :)

Hoy he encontrado esta tienda en etsy se llama Terehurst (pincha aquí para visitar la tienda) que me ha encantado!! hacen unos muñecos de animales súper bonitos. Estos me han gustado mucho, son unos conejos estilo steampunk!! Adorables :)

He tenido la oportunidad de hablar un poco con Tere Hurst y preguntarle un poco sobre su trabajo:

I had the opportunity to talk a little with Tere Hurst and ask a little about your work:

Kandy: ¿A qué te dedicas? ¿La fabricación de estos muñecos es tu trabajo o es más bien un hobby?

Kandy: Does making these dolls is your full time job or is it a hobby?

TereHurst: Mis tiendas en Etsy Terehurst y Murmurfremo se han convertido en un trabajo a tiempo completo desde enero de 2011. Trabajo más horas ahora que ante pero lo disfruto más que ¡en cualquier otro trabajo que haya tenido!

Terehurst: My Etsy shops (TEREHURST and MURMURFREMO) have become my full time job since January 2011. I work more hours now than ever before but enjoy it ten times more than any other job I've had!

K: Cuénteme un poco sobre tu tienda, ¿Cuál es tu inspiración para crear estos maravillosos animales de estilo steampunk?

K:Tell me a little about your shop, your inspiration to create that awsome steampunk animals?

T: Me encanta el Steampunk y la era victoriana, en especial la arquitectura y la ropa con todos los artilugios. Hace aproximadamente un año empecé a ver películas como El castillo ambulante (y otras películas de Hayao Miyazaki), Steamboy, Ciudad de los Niños Perdidos, e incluso películas tontas como Wild Wild West y la Liga de Caballeros Extraordinarios. Todos ellos me inspiraron a hacer algo diferente con los muñecos de animales que había estado haciendo, algo más complejo. Lo siguiente que sé es que estaba creando muñecos de animales Steampunk! Estos muñecas tienen un montón de tiempo pero me gusta mucho todo el proceso detrás de su creación.

T: I love Steampunk and the Victorian era, particularly the architecture and clothing with all the cool gadgets. About a year ago I started watching movies like Howl's Moving Castle (and other movies by Hayao Miyazaki), Steamboy, City of Lost Children, and even silly movies like Wild Wild West and League of Extraordinary Gentleman. They all inspired me to try something different with the animal dolls I had been making, something more complex. Next thing I know I was making Steampunk animal dolls! These dolls do take a lot of time but I really enjoy the whole process behind their creation.
